Descrição

Key words: Macro-micromorphology, Papaver rhoeas, Papaver bipinnatum.
Genus Papaver L. belongs to Papaveraceae. This genus contains laticifer tissues in various vegetative and reproductive organs and, due to diverse alkaloids, possesses medicinal value. One of the challenges of this genus is synonymy and the independence of species in floras and botanical references. For example, in Flora Iranica, the flora of vascular plants in Iran, Flora of the USSR, and Mikheev in the flora of the Caucasus describe P. rhoeas and P. bipinnatum as two independent species, but in Flora of Iraq they are synonyms. Current research pays attention to macromorphologic studies in the two species. For further assurance, the micromorphology of pollen grains and seeds was examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Herbarium specimens from the herbarium in Russia and from the Plant Protection Research Institute of Iran, as well as from the North Tehran and Gorgan branches of Islamic Azad University, were prepared, and SEM studies were carried out at Tehran University. Our results indicate that the two species can be differentiated based on macro- micromorphological traits. In conclusion, based on other floras and these results, the two species are independent.
