Genus Papaver L. belongs to Papaveraceae. This genus contains laticifers tissues in various vegetative and reproductive organs and, due to diverse alkaloids, possesses medicinal value. One of the challenges of this genus is synonymy and independence of species in floras and botanical references. For example, in flora Iranica, flora of vascular plants in Iran, flora of Turkey, flora of Iraq and Caucasus describe P. argemone and P. belangeri is given as its synonym. But in flora de l'Iran and flora of the USSR describe them as two independent species. Current research pay attention to macro-morphologic studies in two species. For further assurance, the micromorphology of pollen grains and seeds were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Herbarium specimens from the herbarium in Russia and from the Plant protection research institute of Iran, as well as from the North Tehran and Gorgan branches of Islamic Azad University, were prepared, and SEM studies were carried out at Tehran University. Our results indicate that the two species can be differentiated based on macro- micromorphological traits. The authors would like to thank CNPq, CAPES and FAPEMIG.
